The Arched Scullery

A former formal dining room is now a hardworking scullery defined by an arched entry, custom cabinetry, and timeless details. A beautiful blend of old-world charm and modern function.

The Arched Scullery

This room began as a formal dining space — traditional, reserved, and used only on special occasions. The homeowner wanted something more meaningful: a place to cook with her grandchildren, bake, prep meals, gather as a family, and still have space for large dinners during holidays and celebrations. The room needed to work hard while feeling warm, beautiful, and connected to the rest of the home.

To support that vision, the architecture of the space was thoughtfully reshaped. One of the original doorways to the foyer was closed off to create privacy and a more intentional flow, and a new arched opening was built in its place. This arch quickly became the defining feature of the room, mirroring the existing arched windows and grounding the space with a sense of history and softness.

Custom cabinetry in a misty blue wraps the room, offering deep storage, dedicated zones for baking and cooking, and a calm backdrop for everyday use. Integrated counters and backsplash keep the palette quiet and tailored, while brass hardware and warm lighting introduce a sense of understated elegance. A tin ceiling overhead adds texture and a nod to traditional sculleries, giving the room character and timeless charm without overwhelming the design.

A central island, set on carved wooden legs, serves multiple roles: prep table, teaching station, serving surface, and a casual spot for grandchildren to help in the kitchen. Open shelving displays everyday ceramics and collected pieces, keeping the space functional while adding warmth and personality.

When needed, the room easily transitions back into a dining space for large gatherings — a testament to the thoughtful layout and cabinetry design. It’s both hardworking and beautiful, equal parts utility and hospitality.

What was once an unused dining room is now a treasured part of the home — a space for cooking, teaching, sharing meals, and building family memories. The Arched Scullery blends craftsmanship, warmth, and purpose, all centered around the joy of gathering.
